Russian Hill is steep enough that some of its streets are not streets at all. Parts of Vallejo and Green are staircases. The block of Lombard between Hyde and Leavenworth had a 27 percent grade before its eight turns were built in 1922. The high point, the Vallejo Street crest, is 343 feet.

The buildings follow the ground. Brown shingle houses from the late 1800s sit near the summit, Spanish Colonial Revival buildings from the 1910s and 1920s line the slopes, and 1960s apartment towers rise above everything. Pedestrian lanes like Macondray Lane have houses with no roadway in front.
All of that changes how a window cleaner works. Russian Hill window cleaning is mostly an access problem: where the equipment goes, how the downhill side is reached, and what can be done from a stairway or a lane. Dan Mount Cleaning Services sorts that out before quoting.
Macondray Lane runs from Leavenworth to Taylor as a footpath, and cars are not allowed on it. Havens Place, Marion Place and the Greenwich and Vallejo stairways work the same way. For a house on one of these lanes, poles, hoses and tools all have to be carried in on foot.
The Vallejo Street crest holds the oldest shingle-style houses still standing in the Bay Area, built in the late 1880s. The style was a rustic, brown-shingled reaction to Victorian ornament. Wood windows set in weathered shingles call for hand work and a gentle rinse, since soaked sills do old wood no favors.
From the upper blocks the view takes in the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, Marin County and the Golden Gate Bridge. Glass that sees that much sky is exposed on more than one side. The faces turned toward the Golden Gate usually show salt and mineral haze first, and corner units collect it on two sides.
Towers like the Summit, a 32 story building at 999 Green Street, went up in the 1960s before residents won strict height limits in the early 1970s. Buildings that tall are outside our scope. We clean up to four stories, which takes in the hill's houses, flats and small apartment buildings.
Each window cleaning job here includes the glass inside and out, the screens, the tracks and the sills. We hand squeegee interiors and whatever can be reached at ground level. Exterior panes on the second, third and fourth floors are brushed and rinsed from below using a water-fed pole and deionized water, which leaves no mineral spots.
For flats and small condo buildings, our condo and apartment window cleaning page explains how shared buildings are scheduled. Restaurants and shops on Polk and Hyde can use commercial window cleaning. We handle gutter cleaning, soft-wash building cleaning for weathered siding and stairs, and solar panel cleaning. On a call we ask what is in front of the building: a street, a stairway or a lane. We also ask whether the rear can be reached through a garage, a side gate or a lower unit. A few photos of the front and back help us quote accurately.
The crooked block of Lombard draws about two million visitors a year, and tourists ride the cable car line along Hyde Street. Near those blocks, an early start keeps hoses and poles clear of foot traffic. Our hours begin at 7 AM Monday through Saturday, with Sunday by appointment.
Exposure changes block by block. A sheltered garden lane collects pollen and leaf dust. An open corner near the top collects salt and wind-driven grit. Fog is heaviest in summer, so many buildings do well with one cleaning after fog season and another in spring.
Yes, as long as the building is four stories or less. Equipment gets carried in by hand, and the pole works from the lane, the stairs or the garden below the windows. Describe the approach when you call so the written quote reflects the extra setup.
No. We work on buildings up to four stories, and a tower needs a different kind of contractor and equipment. Most houses, flats and small apartment buildings on Russian Hill are within our range. If you are unsure about your building, call and describe it.
Used correctly, yes. The pole delivers a low-pressure flow of deionized water through a soft brush. It is not a pressure washer. On windows with loose putty or failing paint we switch to hand cleaning, and we tell you which method each side will get.
Call (415) 975-1522 with the address, the number of stories and a rough window count. Mention stairs, lanes or anything else between the street and the building. We put the price in writing before any work starts, for one-time jobs and recurring service alike.
